Shifting Subjects: stories from Asian Australian life
Growing up, Lisa Divissi absorbed all sorts of messages about what being ‘Asian’ in Australia might entail from news media, popular culture and the larger zeitgeist. But in her new series, Shifting Subjects, she’s more interested in seeing things for herself. By documenting the Asian Australian stories around her, Lisa sets out to complicate our ideas of who we are, while carefully expanding on a clearer picture of us together.

I decided to use this newsletter as a means of letting people know when a new episode goes up.
I’m treating Shifting Subjects as a long term project and experiment. Forming a true understanding of what it is to be Asian Australian requires building a picture in increments, story by story. The more instances of documentation, the fuller and more detailed the picture. Doing so requires time and money, i.e. two things that I can’t guarantee for fear of hectic burn out.
My plan is therefore to make stories when I can. Beyond this first season (five episodes), I’ll keep looking for funding, applying for grants… maybe I’ll find ways to fund it myself. And when I get money and time, I’ll make more episodes. And when they’re published, I’ll send you a newsletter so you know about it :)
Of course, you can always just do it the old fashioned way, by subscribing on your podcast app and turning on notifications. Whatever works for you.
